With over 20+ years experience in the sporting business as an International footballer, World Cup scout and player manager, the Head of OPB Football Fitness Program, Andy Bernal, knows what it takes!
A graduate and captain of the Australian Institute of Sport football programme, Andy captained his country at U17 level prior to making his full international Socceroo debut. After this, Andy became the first ever Australian international to play in Spain when he transferred to Sporting Gijon. This was followed by spells at Albacete FC, Xerez FC, Nottingham Forest, Ispwich Town with the pinnacle being Reading FC where he played for seven seasons including a Wembley playoff final and captaining the team on many occasions until his retirement in 2000.
After his playing days came to an end, Andy's involvement in the game did not stop there! In 2000, he joined the SFX Sports Group where he jointly managed Tim Cahill before moving onto the role of David Beckham’s personal football manager at Real Madrid. During 2005-2006, he also worked for the FFA as Guus Hiddinks Socceroo scout during the successful World Cup campaign!
Andy knows first hand that to play football at the very highest level you must also be a world-class athlete! Many of Canberra's born or once based Socceroos and Young Socceroos like Ned Zelic, Carl Valeri, Tom Rogic, Ryan Edwards, Cameron Edwards, Alistair Edwards, Scott Galloway, Steven Lustica and OPB's Kaz Patafta have worked with Andy on many football agendas! Our programme aims to work with each player to enhance their chances of being successful and living the football dream like many others!
